Safer Computing

We've been working through our operations manual over the last month and refining our processes, it's an ongoing job full of fun and excitement.  Actually, the only thing that makes it bearable is the fact that I get to use Freemind to it's real potential.  For those of you who don't know freemind but work in organising tasks, jobs and have to get your head around the BIG picture, then go visit http://freemind.sourceforge.net.

Heres one for the techies who have struggled with getting data off damaged block devices in the past (you know who you are). For my regular readers you might be thinking I'm referring to our recent drop of tempature and snow. Not really, however it is great weather for Recovery, Data-Recovery. Recently we've had a couple of hard drives that have bad blocks and physical damage.

We just recently had a customer who switches computers frequently ask me for a way to take their email with them between computers. This can be a tricky prospect unless your using remote services or hosted applications. Not so any more!

Is it spring? Every once and a while I look up from my desk and see the delluge of junk that is the result of my lifestyle. Sometimes I even get out of my cave to see sunlight and go home for a rest. Whilst this doesn't happen very often, it does happen.

A customer recently switched to Telecom from Vodafone as they wern't getting the support they wanted from Vodafone (first time I've heard of someone switching to Telcom for better suppport!!) However, they were having some email issues pulling email out from Telecom. They spent a number of frustrating hours with Telecom technical support getting it configured, with no success.

Some of you may remember the Great Browser Wars. Netscape had a world full of market share with it's web browser “Navigator”, then M$ Decided it wanted a bite of this pie and introduced Internet Explorer into the Windows 95 plus pack. This basically destroyed Netscape Navigator over a short period and introduced all kinds off issues to the world.

SPAM SPAM SCAM. I've covered spam a few times in my articles and I don't intend to do so this time (even though the opening line is SPAM!) However, this does sorta kinda relate to spam. Beware spam bearing gifts, or password requests or online banking requests or domain renewal advisement.

Having just taken on another techie full time I had to equip him with the worlds most essential geek tool. As geeks we are called to duty at all times of the day and night and must always be prepared for all situations. It is a requirement for all my staff not only to be geeks, but to carry the tools of gods, uh, geeks.

Keeping with the theme of last week we'll keep talking about ways to deal with the influx of emails we get on a daily basis. I'm going to tell you about mail filters.
