After a hard day behind the screens it is nice to sit back relax and enjoy some time off, behind the screens. ;-) Google Earth is always fun for getting to know our planet, and now, you can get to know your oceans too. Good on you Google for making our planet smaller.

L2TP Tunnels, separating OSPF clouds, Dynamic Routing and Monitoring Services are a few of my favourite things. It was nice to have some rain over the weekend. I really enjoy the rain, it gives me a chance to be a geek without the threat of sunshine and the outdoors raining on my parade. So I spent the weekend studying, trying to enhance my geek chi. I had some comments that my articles are getting a bit soft and fluffy. Not enough technical fat to chew, I think this is true, but there is too little space to get technical, so for the moment I'm going to stick to Free Stuff for the masses!

One of my colleagues was reading up on Windows 7 and suggested I should talk about the impending release of Windows 7 and the stopping of support for Windows XP next year. Don't panic! Windows XP support is commited by Microsoft until April the 8th 2014. However, by this time all my savvy readers will have nothing to fear as you'll be using Ubuntu, Firefox, OpenOffice, ClamAV and all those tasty little OpenSource treats that have matured into reliable and dependable technologies. So, lets keep it free!

Carrying on with the theme of last weeks article, lets keep it free and focus on a few of those good Free alternatives out there.  Lets start with Picasa from Google.  Picasa is a photo management tool which makes dealing with photos much easier then trawling through directories.  If you're like most pople and have a digital camera, than changes are you have a large quantity of photos strewn all over your computer then Picasa is a tool you must consider.  I've used many different applications for managing photos and they have all failed in some area badly for me.

The internet is a great source of information, software, movies, music, culture, news, blogs and just about everything that doesn't need to be tied down.
It is also a great source of free things, without having to resort to piracy or downloading dodgy material. I thought I'd list some sites that offer great free knowledge and information.

Safer Computing

We've been working through our operations manual over the last month and refining our processes, it's an ongoing job full of fun and excitement.  Actually, the only thing that makes it bearable is the fact that I get to use Freemind to it's real potential.  For those of you who don't know freemind but work in organising tasks, jobs and have to get your head around the BIG picture, then go visit http://freemind.sourceforge.net.

Heres one for the techies who have struggled with getting data off damaged block devices in the past (you know who you are). For my regular readers you might be thinking I'm referring to our recent drop of tempature and snow. Not really, however it is great weather for Recovery, Data-Recovery. Recently we've had a couple of hard drives that have bad blocks and physical damage.

We just recently had a customer who switches computers frequently ask me for a way to take their email with them between computers. This can be a tricky prospect unless your using remote services or hosted applications. Not so any more!
